MOTHERHOOD AND CLIMATE CHANGE

Joyous, overwhelming, indescribable….holding my children for the first time. Feelings of responsibility wash over me, the realization that it is my “job” to make the world as safe and as secure as I can. Motherhood - not only providing a safe “womb,” - but also providing a “safe” world for my children to grow and flourish in. I live where access to clean water, food, and shelter are all easily within my reach. It is the unseen that we need to fear, our forgettable but unforgivable actions that are making our world unsafe for our children - the fumes escaping from my car; the energy that is burned and escapes into the sky when I heat and cool my house; and the needless waste, as I buy products wrapped in beautiful packages, packages that end up in the garbage within minutes of reaching my home. Pollution, carbon dioxide, greenhouse gases, all poisoning our water, our earth, our children.

As a Climate Reality Project presenter and through our work at ClimateMama I get to reach out, talk to and educate people at the grassroots level about the dangers we are facing with climate change - My job, my calling, my profession, my passion, and my RESPONSIBILITY as a mother - It all makes sense. Transformational; my eyes are now wide open. I know what we face. I know what we are up against. You need to know too.

Join me and demand a better future for our children and our grandchildren. We need to stop burning fossil fuels. We need to demand a clean energy future for our children. When they asked you what you did, you can tell them you didn’t stand by and do nothing. Be a mother; protect your children. Join me as we stand up for our mother, Mother Earth. She is hurt, she is crying and she is showing us that we need to do something now.

CLIMATE MAMA CAMPAIGNS

1. iMatter Legal Campaign

Stand up for the kids in your life. Join the brave young people  from Kids vs Global Warming and the iMatter March campaign who have teamed up with Our Children's Trust to sue our government for the right for clean air for current and future generations. The plaintiffs are asking the judge to rule that the atmosphere is a common resource, a "public trust" shared by all. The lawsuit faces a critical hearing set for May 11th, when opponents will try to stop the suit from going forward. Just in time for Mother's Day, sign the petition and support this fight against our changing climate, go to Roots Action now.

2. 350.org AND Connecting the Dots: ONGOING CAMPAIGNS

Join the grassroots movement 350.org that has erupted in 188 countries, spawned it's own movements, including the Tar Sands Action, and energized a new generation of climate activists. Find out what is so special about "350" and why it has ignited a movement! Join an ongoing campaign.

Check out the 350.org or the newest campaign, Connecting the Dots: Between Climate Change and Extreme Weather! You NEVER know where a 350 campaign may lead.... Our Climate Mama, Harriet, got so excited about what was happening, she decided to  "wind it up a notch," even got herself arrested....(something she is very proud of - ask her about it - she is happy to share all the details with you!)

3. CAMPAIGNS TO STOP "FRACKING" AND LEAVE GAS IN THE GROUND

Educate yourself about the 21st Century "Clean (use this word lightly) Energy Gold Rush," better known as "fracked natural gas," and find out that this is in fact anything but Clean, Natural or a Gold mine for anyone but the multinational gas companies involved!

Fracking is a dangerous, loosely regulated method of natural gas extraction that involves pumping a toxic sludge made up of hundreds of chemicals, many of which are "proprietary" and not disclosed, thousands of feet underground to break up rock that is trapping natural gas. This gas is then released and these dangerous chemicals come back to the surface for disposal. This process contaminates our drinking water, our land and the air that we breath. Welcome to Climate Mama

welcome

You are a mother, a father, a grandparent, an uncle, an aunt, a teacher or a child at heart. When you hear the Native American saying, “We don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children”, it makes you stop for a moment and think. You love nature, travel, adventure and believing in a world that is special and unique. Climate change and global warming are words that alarm you, that often seem too big to get your arms around. You care about what’s happening to the world and notice small changes in your own life that seem to point in the direction of a threatened environment. But you wonder if these changes are real, and if they are you can’t imagine what you can do to help change what is happening.
