CO2 Crew: Small Steps to a BIG Difference, Climate Change Solutions

So many of our Climate Mamas and Papas tell us that their eco-conscientiousness has been raised by the actions, words and advice of their children. It’s no different here at ClimateMama!

Join us in cheering on the “CO2 Crew” from Eisenhower Middle School in Bergen County, New Jersey as they continue on their quest to win the final round of the Lexus Eco Challenge! Grab the kids in your life and sign the “Crew’s” pledge, Small Steps to a Carbon Neutral Future, today.

Through videos, stories, great resources, puzzles and games, these middle school kids show us easy steps that we can each take to reduce our carbon footprint, lower our greenhouse gas emissions and help our own families (and our community) be more mindful and tread a little lighter on our earth.

At ClimateMama we believe that these easy “first steps” help us accept our own personal responsibility to be good stewards of the earth. As well, they lead us to demand action on a larger scale by our government – at all levels – as well as by industry and by the international community.

The crisis we face from our human caused climate change is real and often scary. But knowing that there are actions we can take and small steps we can follow, make facing the climate crisis head on a little less scary and also help each of us see that WE each can be a part of the solution.

Thanks CO2 Crew for leading the way!

P.S. Full disclosure: Yes, I am the proud Climate Mama of one of the CO2 Crew members. Although I have to tell you that I have NOT been asked for input, ideas or to offer any comments by any of the Crew members (even my daughter) along the way. Thanks to Lori, my daughter’s amazing and wonderful teacher for sharing the CO2 Crew’s website with me, so I could share it with you. If I had waited for my daughter to share it, it is likely that neither I nor maybe even you, would ever have seen this wonderful website!

Yours,

Climate Mama

Forward on Climate, What happens Next?

50,000 strong, marching in the streets of Washington, 10’s of thousands more marching in their own communities and millions who understand and feel that it is time for national action on climate change.

Moms, dads, grandparents, uncles, aunts, kids….all have spoken and been heard loud and clear. What happens next is up to President Obama.

We have been told through “state department sources” that a decision on the Keystone XL pipeline isn’t likely until later in the Spring…So, we will keep the pressure on, and continue to help others understand that we need to move beyond fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy. Building a fuse to a carbon time bomb in Northern Alberta should clearly NOT be part of the plan!

EPA Team Energy Star: Help Your Kids Share Their Stories!

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

Share

Greetings and Happy Day,

For many of us, the heat of summer is beginning to fade and fall colors are popping up on the trees and shrubs in our neighborhoods. We take a moment to “catch our breath” and gear up for the frenetic action that fall and “back to school” brings. Most of our “big” and “bigger” kids are already back at college or school and we Climate Mamas and Papas continue to be hard at work both inside and outside our homes, starting, refining and perfecting our family “climate change plans.” Over the summer and continuing this fall we love receiving your e-mails, posts, comments and tweets about the multitude of ways that you and your family are “making a difference” on climate change – from keeping the air conditioning dials turned up a few degrees, to riding bikes instead of walking to the park, unplugging electronics that aren’t in use, turning the lights out when leaving a room and making sure to do the best you can to “precycle as well as recycle.”

While we know that the kids in our lives often model and emulate what we do, why not give them the opportunity to “shine” on their own and showcase what they KNOW about being “environmentally sound and climate conscious global citizens!” Show the kids in your life how they can share their stories, videos, and ideas with the EPA’s Team Energy Star. We all know that amazing ideas flow out of the “mouths of babes,” so why not give your “babes” a chance to shine? When we help our family, our community, our place of worship, business or our school, we are setting an example of ways to help the world around us.

The EPA’s Team Energy Star is running an Essay Contest NOW through September 17th. The kids in your life are invited to submit a video, essay, poem or any other creative “picture” that showcases how to use Team Energy Star resources to develop energy and climate saving ideas that work for your family.

For some examples and ideas that children have already submitted, take a visit over to The Big Green Purse where some fun entries for the Team Energy star contest are already on display.

Top 3 Back to School Supplies: Binders, Treats, Books

What’s the relationship – Treats, Books, Binders and Climate Change? In fact the relationship between all three and climate change is KEY if we hope to get a handle on reining in the worst impacts of climate change – We MUST learn how to adapt to the human caused changes happening to our climate that are already with us, AND mitigate the impacts that are coming our way – So, the types of treats we give our kids, where we source their back to school supplies (and all the products we purchase) and the messages and information we share with our kids about climate change are all important for our planet and serve as valuable life skills and lessons for our kids. We need to learn and model how to live our lives with a “lighter footprint” with less impact on our planet. The kids in our life are never too young, nor too old to learn these life lessons.

Check out our “Top 3” back to school items that we see as ways to help connect the dots for you and the kids in your life between how we live our lives and empowering us all to take action on climate change.

BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES: We LOVE our Naked Binder school and office supplies! Last year was the first time we tried out these supplies. Over the course of the year, my kids “Naked binders” were personalized, and “made their own” standing up incredibly well to the test of time, wear and tear! The binders and folders were often the topic of conversation amongst their friends and teachers, helping everyone see how we can be

“school cool” and mindful and caring of our planet at the same time. Naked binder makes pocket folders, tab dividers and 3 ring binders from FSC certified, 100% post-consumer waste binder board, 100% cotton cloth, a FSC certified papers and metal rings – no plastics, vinyls or toxins. All Naked Binder products are made and sourced in the US.

Naked Binder “thinks sustainably” and makes sure it’s clear from the moment you visit their website. They define a sustainable product as: one that is economical; efficient to create; crafted from renewable non-harming sources; works better for a longer period of time; and it’s easily returned into the recycling stream. Sounds good to us! You can buy the products directly from their website, also making your footprint smaller as you do less driving around!

TREATS: Our friends at Healthy Child Healthy World have turned us on to UNREAL, a new type of candy that is “UNJUNKED.” I know the “candy” caught your attention. Candy and back to school?? Yes, we all try to teach our children that healthy snacks are important. And while I am all for promoting organic whole fruit, veggies and nuts as snacks, sometimes I just want my CHOCOLATE (and I know my kids occasionally feel the same way TOO!) So, as you start planning those after school treats, consider stocking up on some Unreal candy.

Unreal was started at the behest of a kid, Nicky, who wanted to find treats that were free of things he couldn’t pronounce and contained ingredients that he knew, recognized and were made out of “good” things, not junk. Unreal uses real cane sugar, real milk from grass eating cows, no artificial flavors, no corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, fats or artificial preservatives and twice the cacao as other leading brands. The ingredients used are non-GMO and are sourced responsibly. Unreal tells us they are ready to compete, head to head, dollar to dollar, taste test to taste test with leading brands of candy.

My kids and official taster friends loved the cool design on the packaging (which Unreal is working on making in a more sustainable way) and thought the candy tasted amazing. But was it actually better then the regular chocolate bars and candy coated chocolates and peanuts they sometimes eat? The verdict – certainly as good and maybe even better, so as a replacement it was a home run! Unreal seems to have all the right “ingredients” down to the people that are working at the company, and the right game plan to encourage other companies to unjunk their food too!

BOOKS: A shout out to author and our new friend, Chuck McCutcheon. A while back we wrote a post about our chat with Chuck and his book: “What are Global Warming and Climate Change? Answers for Young Readers.” As one friend recently told me: “Talking to my kids about sex was easier then trying to explain climate change!” So as with the sex talk, having a great book that serves as a reference for your discussion is key. Chuck’s book helps you answer many of those tough questions. In honor of the second anniversary of the publication of his book, Chuck is offering a giveaway: Simply buy one copy on Amazon.com, notify him via his website and he will send a second copy to you or to anyone you want for free!

This post is in solidarity and in support of the Green Mom’s Annual Back School Carnival! Check out Mindful Momma for a full listing of supporting blog posts and a wealth of information on how to make your kids transition to school “greener” and a little more “sustainable!”

Climate Change and War Games, Real and Imagined, Come Play!

Tired of the kids in your life (young and old) playing “Call of Duty?” Let them know there is a “new game in town” and that the US Navy is calling out to them to play it! This is a real life war game, looking to recruit players who will help find ways to improve the U.S. Navy’s combat capability and energy security, particularly by “promoting energy efficiency and diversifying its energy supply (use of alternative energy) while working to reducing reliance on fossil fuels from overseas.” Does it sound like science fiction? In fact a 2010 Defense Department Report identified climate change and energy security as “prominent military vulnerabilities,” noting that climate change in particular is an “accelerant of instability and conflict.” As such, the US Navy is charging ahead to try to reduce these vulnerabilities and is now asking for our help!

At a recent meeting organized by the Environmental Defense Fund, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told the audience that “climate change has raised the need for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, hitting national security in the process.” This comes at the same time that climate deniers in our government, led by Senator Inhofe are trying to cut alternative energy programs from the military’s budget.

Grab the kids in your life and watch this short video developed by the US Navy. Find out where we “could be” 10 years from now if we don’t continue the aggressive and forward thinking ideas that the military is currently working on to reduce it’s dependence on fossil fuels.

Now suggest that your kids do the “patriotic thing” and join forces and “play the game” to try to help “crowd source” ideas and ways to lessen our dependence on fossil fuels! (be advised, this game is for those “older kids” in your life, the ones in or out of college, or on their way there shortly)…Also, this version of the “game” may only be “live” for a few days so tell them to check out MMOWGLI today!!

Yours,

Climate Mama
