REJECTED: Keystone XL, One Happy ClimateMama!

While “nothing is over until it is over,” for the moment we have a definitive answer from the President to the “game of chicken” that he has been in regarding the Keystone XL pipeline.

President to House Republicans: Game OVER.

In a statement from the White House issued at around 3:20pm ET on January 18th, President Obama rejected the current proposal from TransCanada to build the Keystone XL pipeline. In December, Congress tied an extension of a tax relief bill to a 60 day “thumbs up or down” approval process on this pipeline, which was set to expire on February 21st. As our Climate Mamas and Papas know, this is a key advocacy issue and close to the “heart” of OUR Climate Mama, Harriet Shugarman.

As the controversy will continue, here are some of the FACTS on the pipeline, in case you get questioned about these issues at your next dinner party, office “water cooler” conversation, or at your child’s hockey game:

1. The Keystone XL Pipeline will create few, if any jobs. TRUE Claims of 20,000 to 100,000 are gross exaggerations. The State Department and TransCanada have said that no more than 6000 temporary jobs will be created and independent estimates put the permanent number of jobs at no more than 50!

2. Keystone XL helps promote Energy Security and Independence. FALSE Companies with refineries in Texas at the “end” of the 1700 mile pipeline from the Alberta Tar Sands have said that most of the oil to be produced is targeted for export markets, not the US.

Tar Sands In Action: July 2011

Why does ClimateMama care about this one pipeline? Because we all need to draw a line in the sand somewhere…many groups have rallied behind this line in the “tar sands.” We need to question where our energy comes from. Do we want to perpetuate our addiction to fossil fuels by building more and more pipelines to carry oil and gas? Or should we be investing in transmission lines to carry energy from the sun and wind to places around our country, so we don’t have to rely on any fossil fuels, domestic or foreign.

Grab the kids in your life and ask them to weigh in on this…their future, and ours is in our hands, lets think carefully about these questions, lets get the facts. And lets make sure our politicians get the facts too (and not just repeat misinformation!) We need to fight for a clean energy future for our children and this pipeline is one of the fights worth fighting for…Seems like we are getting there and can now put this one in the WIN column! But the WAR is far from over, even if this battle may finally be won….

Fighting for Truth, Justice and a Clean Energy Future for our Children!

As you may have heard (particularly if you have been following Climate Mama’s advocacy adventures of late!) on November 10th President Obama

Credit: A. Jennis

issued all of us a “stay of execution” by postponing the building of the Keystone XL Pipeline that would carry dirty, energy intensive, carbon polluting Tar Sands oil from Alberta, Canada to Texas (for export abroad!!) Seemingly listening and hearing the “demands of the people,” the President called for a review of the path of the pipeline and most importantly for a review of the climate change impacts of the pipeline as well!

Already however, oil and gas companies, and the pipeline builder TransCanada Pipeline are trying to put their own “spin” on the President’s announcement; reminding us that it is “simply a delay.” As well, they have announced that a new “route” for the pipeline is in the works, one that doesn’t cross over the sensitive Ogallala aquifer. As we well know, rerouting the pipeline ISN’T an acceptable fix. STOPPING the pipeline permanently and “stranding” the tar sands in northern Alberta is the key; particularly and until such time as we can either “ramp up” our renewable energy production and/or “put a price” on carbon, thereby making tar sands oil too expensive to produce.

A discussion to have with the kids in your life – the power of people to change government and industry action – key!

If you live in the Northeast USA and are looking for an opportunity to see “people power” in action, consider letting your kids “play hooky” from school on Monday, November 21st to accompany you to Trenton, NJ as you all take part in a field trip and lesson on the power of civil society by joining in the fight for our right for clean air and clean water. A brewing and critical issue in this country is the battle against “fracking” – a process which involves pumping chemical sludge deep underground in order to fracture shale and collect natural gas. This “gas-gold rush” is captivating our nation, fueled by advertisements by the oil and gas industry promoting “clean burning” domestic natural gas. We are being asked, in the name of “energy security” to allow our Clean Water and Clean Air Acts to be disregarded, as the chemicals used in fracking are “proprietary” and the waste water produced in most cases isn’t treatable though existing waste water treatment plants.

Watch this short video by actor and activist Mark Ruffalo and take action on fracking today. If you can’t join the protest on November 21st, do sign on to one of the many petitions calling on the Governors of New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania as well as President Obama to NOT open up the Delaware River Basin to natural gas drilling and fracking. There is nothing “natural or clean” about the process currently being used to extract this gas or about the gas itself; nor the greenhouse gases produced when we burn it! Protect the water we drink now and our children’s right for a future that includes clean and safe air to breath and water to drink.. Let’s move “off” our addiction to fossil fuels and towards a clean and renewable energy future for our children, one that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels.

Show your children you care, fight to keep the Delaware River Basin free from “fracking;” sign a petition, call your governor, or grab a ride on a bus and come to Trenton on November 21st!

Yours,

Climate Mama

Tar Sands Action Rally and Circle the White House: Home Movie

Monday, November 7th, 2011

For those of you who were “there in spirit” but couldn’t be with us in person, some “home movies” from the action. It was an incredible day filled with hope and promise. Bill McKibben told us the night before to get ready to either “give President Obama a big hug, or to put him under house arrest!” I am going with the “Big Hug” as the day was filled with joy and happiness, deserving of a HUG.

The more than 12,000 people, young and old who were able to be in Washington on November 6th at the Tar Sands Action Rally and Circle The White House Event were “showered with sunshine” from Mother Nature and strong feelings of hopefulness from each other. We all hope that President Obama is paying attention, listening and seeking the truth on this pipeline and what it will and won’t accomplish. For some information and some “demystifying” of the facts, check out the National Wildlife Federation’s “Top 10 Myths Vs. Facts About Keystone XL!”

I love Naomi Klein’s analogy on stopping the pipeline: “What we are doing is giving the Tar Sands a big Heart Attack, as we cut off it’s arteries, one by one!” So glad to be a part of the “action” and to have the opportunity to share it with my children. Grab the kids in your life and ask them what they think about the protests, the tar sands, and our move towards a clean and renewable future. Young children or old, they will have an opinion I am sure!

While you are at it, call the White House Comment Line with your kids at 202 456 1111 and tell our President to join the “hug” and say NO to the Keystone XL Pipeline!

Yours,

Climate Mama

Do you remember when…Tobacco Companies Sponsored Sports Teams…Now it’s Oil, Coal and Gas Companies

Monday, October 24th, 2011

I recently went to a New York Football Giants game with my family. While watching the ads go by on the electronic billboards (yes, I also did pay attention to the game too…), I was intrigued by the various sponsors that advertised.

As I watched the BP logo go “’round and round” the stadium on the rotating electronic advertising signs and also as BP was showcased on the “Jumbo TV Screens” at each end of the stadium, I explained to my kids the connection I made between the BP signs and my childhood memories of tobacco ads at sporting events. They didn’t seem too concerned or bothered. Are you making the same connections as me, do you think I should be bothered?

DOUBT from The Climate Reality Project on Vimeo.

I wondered aloud to my children and asked them if they thought we would “see the day” when oil, coal and gas companies wouldn’t be allowed to advertise or promote sports and other events. I also mentioned the irony of the ads during the Republican Presidential hopefuls debates on TV; most of the TV commercials I saw “are brought to you” by coal companies or organizations that represent coal. Why is that?

I was pleased however to also see a local Solar company advertising at the Giants game. I am looking forward to the day that that is a “regular” and not “noteworthy” phenomenon. If you have a few minutes, share this with the kids in your life and get “their take.” Also, watch the Climate Reality Project video on the tobacco industry with your kids, it will be eye opening for all!

Thought for the day..

Freaked about Fracking

Guest Post by Ronnie Citron-Fink, Moms Clean Air Force

(Grab the kids in your life and learn more about Fracking from Ronnie. Fracking is likely coming “home” soon to an area near you – unless we do something to stop it….)

“Hey, how you doin’?
I just came by to say hello.
I work for the gas company.
I just happen to be in the neighborhood, you know.
But I was thinkin’, you must be tired of workin’ that rake and that hoe.
I could make you lots more money than those potatoes.” ~ No Fracking Way, Marc Black

While traveling along the Massachusetts Turnpike to visit my children in Boston a few weeks ago, I listened to a radio interview with Marc Black. He’s the singer/songwriter who wrote the song, No Fracking Way, which tells the story of farmers who are approached by gas companies to drill on their land.

What Is Fracking?
Hydro-fracturing or fracking is a method of gas extraction where water, sand and highly toxic chemicals are injected deep into the earth at high pressure to fracture rock formations and release natural gas. Once the gas is liberated, it comes to the surface and can be used as a source of energy.

Fracking Comes Home
Fracking has been kicking up its dirty heels in the Northeast, particularly along the Marcellus Shale region of New York and Pennsylvania. I’ve been a New Yorker my whole life, so when I discovered New York ranks as the highest state in HAP (Hazardous Air Pollution), it was daunting to me to learn gas companies are using persuasive practices to pad their pocketbooks and advance an agenda to pollute the land, water and air…all in the name of “cleaner” energy.

This stuff drives me crazy if I don’t learn more. So I contacted singer Marc Black. When we met, he made it perfectly clear that while the problem of fracking is complicated, the premise is simple. He explains…

“There’s nothing political about a poisoned well and breathing polluted air. Energy companies with the backing of some politicians are clamoring to drill. They laud natural gas as a source of jobs and a “cleaner” solution to our dependence on foreign oil. What they neglect to tell people is that their wells, land and air become polluted”

To Frack Or Not To Frack?
Since natural gas production has been linked to emissions of benzene, formaldehyde, carbon disulfide, ethane, toluene and xylene. Even short-term exposure to these compounds may produce nausea, dizziness, and respiratory problems, and long-term exposure may be linked to brain tumors, leukemia, and breast cancer. If that doesn’t freak the fracking daylights out of you, maybe this will:

Three More Reasons Why Fracking Is A Problem:
1. Vast amounts of water are required.
2. Since hydro-fracking disrupts fault lines, the process is feared to cause earthquakes.
3. Fracking has never gone through an independent federal environmental impact assessment and is not subject to federal regulations. While the natural gas industry should be required to abide by the same regulations as any other energy producing industry, the fracking process is mostly unregulated due to numerous exemptions in federal laws.

3 Things We Can Do:
1. Ask for a full disclosure of chemicals used in the fracking process (some states already are beginning to require disclosure).
2. Tell the politicians that we do not support spending hundreds of millions of dollars to gut the Clean Air Act and weaken the EPA’s ability to reduce dangerous pollution.
3. Advocate for “real” clean renewable energy, like solar and wind.

“So when the man comes up to you and he says
I wanna give you all this money to poison your land
What will you say, huh?”
~ Marc Black
