Climate Change and Newborn Health: A Global Conversation

Monday, April 8th, 2013

Share

How much do you really know when it comes to the unacceptable toll of newborn deaths, around the world? According to USAID, in some parts of the world, a mother is more likely to die in childbirth than she is to finish secondary school! What then does this mean for the health and welfare of her newborn child?

Check out some of these eye-opening facts we found in a recent article of the Impatient Optimists by Dr. Darmstadt, who leads the Family Health Division of the Gates Foundation:

Did you know that nearly 3 million newborns die each year globally?
Did you know that 99% of these newborns die in low- and middle-income countries?
Did you know that a newborn is 45X times more likely to die in the first month of life, when compared to age 1 month to 5 years?
Did you know that the major causes of newborn death are prematurity, infection, and birth asphyxia when a baby’s brain and other organs do not get enough oxygen before, during or right after birth are?
Did you know that complications of preterm birth are the second leading cause of death in children before their fifth birthday?
And, did you know that the majority of these newborn deaths could be prevented?

For too long these facts and more–what we call the global newborn health agenda–have been off the radar. While the world has seen progress in addressing childhood illnesses in poorer countries, including pneumonia, malaria and diarrhea, we haven’t seen nearly as much progress in tackling newborn deaths, which now account for about 40 percent of the deaths of children under age 5 around the world.

Are you wondering how newborn deaths and climate change are connected? A few things for you to think about and to talk about with the kids in your life. We know that different time periods of a woman’s pregnancy are particularly sensitive to the effects of environmental exposure, which can impact newborn survival. Environmental stressors such as air and water contamination, pollution, vector born diseases and food security are all crucial issues for expectant mothers and newborns in a changing climate. As well, the rise of extreme weather events that can cause displacement, long term drought and food security issues, exacerbating climate refugee situations all impact newborn health as well. For more information, the US Environmental Protection Agency has some interesting facts on the impacts of climate change on human health and adaptation.

From April 15-18tth, 2013 there will be a global conversation taking place in Johannesburg, South Africa at the Global Newborn Health Conference. We will look for and are interested in hearing what comes out of conversations and panel discussions at this conference on the linkages between newborn health and climate change.

An important fact to keep in mind is that on the ground in many developing countries the ability of local populations to impact our changing climate directly remains very small. The average carbon footprint of most people living in developing countries is around 4 tons a year, while for most of us living in the United States it is around 20 tons! Global climate disruption, climate change, global warming, whatever we label it, is GLOBAL and what we do or do not do in one part of the world can directly impact maternal and newborn health in another. How we live, drive, power our homes and offices and what we eat in the developed world, directly impacts the lives of people living in developing countries. Yet “connecting these dots” seems too diffuse and too disconnected for most of us.

In hopes of helping to “connect these dots,” we are lending our voice and our blog to raise attention to newborn deaths as part of the Global Team of 200. At ClimateMama, we continue to try to help you make the connections between our everyday actions and what these actions can mean to the rest of the world. We need the political will to change policies that will address climate change in a real and serious way; putting a price on carbon and supporting industries that will move us towards a clean, renewable future are key. Not only will these kinds of policies help our children directly but they will help children the world over live longer, healthier lives. But until our political leaders hear and feel pressure from us, they will continue to drag their feet, change things only at the margins, and watch in dysfunctional silence as our march toward the “edge” of the climate cliff continues moving forward at a precarious pace….

I am THRILLED to be part of the Global Team of 200, a highly specialized group of members of Mom Bloggers for Social Good that concentrates on issues involving women and girls, children, world hunger and maternal health. As we often discuss here at ClimateMama, amplifying our voices is key to raising attention to pressing issues. Through the Global Team of 200, we at ClimateMama will be sharing and helping to “connect the dots” on how climate change exacerbates problems for women and girls in both developed and developing countries. We will also be pointing out some of the ways that together we can work to adapt and mitigate these impacts through education, information, advocacy and action!

Our Motto at the Global Team of 200: Individually we are all powerful. Together we can change the world. We believe in the power of collective action to help others and believe in ourselves to make this world a better place for our children and the world’s children.

Each month we will be blogging about and for different global causes, stay tuned and check back here and on our collective and individual sites for posts this month on behalf of Oxfam, UNICEF and the World Food Program.

Global Frackdown: Climate Mamas Speak Out on the Dangers of Fracking

Friday, September 21st, 2012

Share

September 22nd is Global Frackdown day. A Day of solidarity with the worldwide movement to raise attention to the inherent dangers posed by fracking. Fracking as a drilling technique that involves the fracturing of rock through the use of high pressure, chemical laced water that is pumped deep under ground, releasing the gas that has been trapped in the rock for millenia. This type of “extreme fossil fuel extraction” is in the same category as tar sands oil extraction and deep sea drilling and is a direct and immediate threat to our drinking water, our health, our communities, our climate and our children’s future.

Every day we are inundated by advertisements on TV, radio and the web from oil and gas companies trying to convince us that fracking is safe, “good” for us and some how “patriotic” as well. Countries around the world, communities across the United States, environmental and business organizations, houses of worship and a wide array of citizens groups are demanding answers and not accepting this well financed PR spin. We need the facts, we need to understand the reality and the truth BEFORE we allow the oil and gas industry to do irreparable damage. This damage is already being wrought in counties, towns, and cities and directly impacts mothers, fathers and children all over the United States and around the world.

Climate Mamas at the Shale Gas Outrage 9-12

Sit down with the kids in your life, grab a cup of coffee, tea or even a glass of wine, relax and take some time to read our blog “carnival” which include some amazing posts by Climate Mamas from around North America, Women Eco-Warriors and GreenMom Carnival friends who are sharing with us their stories and facts on fracking. Learn something today. Take time to do your own research and learn more. Share your knowledge with your family and friends.

We remind our children every day to – STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN; to THINK before they ACT – let’s show them by example we are doing the same. There is no rush to frack, once we go forward it is extremely difficult if not impossible to go back and clean up and repair our air, our water and our health. Please, let’s all work together and STOP companies that are strictly concerned about their stock price or the price of oil, gas or coal from dictating our options or taking away our decisions on the sources of energy we use and would like to have the option to choose. Join us now and dig in or take a quick read; come back later and again and again to hear personal stories, facts and ideas on fracking from amazing Eco-Warriors in Boston, Southern Jersey, Central and Northern New Jersey, Washington DC, Vancouver Canada, Orange County CA, Upstate New York, Illinois, Virgina and Ohio. Have you read or do you have a great post on fracking? Send it to us and we will update the carnival to include it!

Fracking facts: What it is and what we need to worry about

Anna from Green Talk compares fracking for natural gas to “Freddy Krueger” returning to victimize the Earth (if you don’t know “Freddy,” check in with the teenage boys and horror film aficionados in your family!) Anna shares with us a conversation on fracking she had with Climate Mama and new mom Rachel Dawn Davis who helps us “count the ways” fracking is so bad and tells us what we can do to get educated and take action on fracking.

Lori from Groovy Green Livin takes us back to the basics, explaining what fracking is and helps us understand why, if we know fracking is so dangerous, energy companies seem to have the “legal right” to use this dangerous drilling method anyway. Lori also shares a fun video with us, “Your Water’s on Fire Tonight” better know as “The Fracking Song”..You will need some “lighter moments” as you learn more about fracking, so make sure to share this one with the kids in your life.

Leigh at Green4U shares “What the F is Fracking” and “Fracking Facts” with us, again helping us understand what and how fracking works, its effects on people, why it is so bad for the environment and OUR health. As well she shares with us some of the regulations (or lack there of) behind fracking i.e., how and why is fracking happening everywhere, and why, when even industry tells us they need more clear guidelines and regulations in place, this remains so hard to accomplish. Quick fact from Leigh: “In West Virginia they have 17 state inspectors and over 55,000 wells. This translates to a minimum of 9 wells that need to be inspected every day, 365 days a year, holidays and weekends included!”

Diane at Big Green Purse reminds us why we DON’T want fracking anywhere near our water. Diane reports that there have been over 1000 cases of water contamination from fracking. And if this isn’t enough for you to stop and question the “company line that fracking is safe,” Diane also tells us that: “people have been injured [and even killed] by fracking explosions and related accidents; tap water has literally been set on fire; chemicals in fracking fluid cause cancer and; methane (which is natural gas) is one of the most damaging greenhouse gas pollutants, impacting our environment and our climate. Diane gives us some great resources to find out more as well as some ideas on what we can do!

Taking Action

Shale Gas Outrage 9-12

Several US states including New York and New Jersey are poised to take big decisions related to fracking. Ronnie from Econesting and one of the leaders behind Moms Clean Air Force shares 3 really important reasons about why we should NOT allow fracking in New York.

Ronnie reminds us of the fight we are in for our children’s future and how each one of us has a powerful role to play in this fight. Ronnie’s post also includes a video clip from a Jimmy Fallon show that the kids in your life will certainly enjoy – a song, “Don’t Frack My Mother” preformed by Yoko Ono and Sean Lennon, founders of Artists Against Fracking. In a post titled “Freaked about Fracking” Ronnie also shares with us some more of the basic facts behind fracking, the chemicals used in this dangerous process and what we can do to raise attention about the dangers of fracking.

Paige at Spit That Out calls out to us from Pennsylvania, Fracking “Ground Zero” in the east, and home to the Marcellus Shale. Paige reminds us that fossil fuel extraction in the name of “energy independence” is far from the “simple solution” that some politicians and many oil and gas companies would have us believe. Paige gives us some great sources to go to and highlights a wonderful action that took place on September 20th in Philadelphia, the Shale Gas Outrage. (For more pictures from that event, check out our ClimateMama Facebook page.)

Karen from Best of Mother Earth introduces us to one of her “inspirations,” Sandra Steingraber who is often called the “Rachel Carson” of our time. Sandra is a scientist and author, an activist who challenges us as parents to demand that our government put in place policies to ensure the healthy development of our children and the eco-system which we all depend on – mother earth. Sandra has set her sights on fracking, to dispel the myths and help us understand the dangerous ramifications for our health, our water and our plant.

New mom and “fractivist” Rachel Dawn Davis shared her story in a compelling and powerful piece on ClimateMama. Learn what she is doing to fight for her newborn’s future and why we should all be doing the same. While you are exploring posts on ClimateMama, make sure to check out a Father’s day message on fracking from a Dad in Ohio, another “ground zero” on fracking.

Desiree from “GreenMomster” shares two posts with us, the first Join the Frack Attack Rally, gives us some more information on why we need to work together to stop fracking and helps us understand what compelled Desiree to plan a family trip to Washington, DC for a Fracking Rally. Desiree tells us that she firmly believes in the old adage about the uselessness of closing the barn door after the horse is gone; aka the time to act is now! Desiree’s follow up post shares photo’s of the Rally with us and explains why, even though it meant “getting out of their comfort zone” attending the Frack Attack Rally was an important and worthwhile day for her family!

The Future We Want?

In June 2012 the world came together in Rio, Brazil to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first Earth Summit. The verdict is still out on the outcome of this event, but the question asked to attendees and the world was “What is the Future We Want?”

Mary from In Women We Trust reminding us that: “Fracking, oil and gas extraction, ocean drilling… are all patches to resolve our energy needs. They are funded because that’s where the money is and the infrastructure. Isn’t it time that we put our money into the infrastructure where the future lives — in safe, clean, passive, and renewable energy?” In Women We Trust always helps us look at the facts at the point of convergence of key economic stakeholders, women, business and sustainable practices. Mary continually reminding us of the huge clout and power that women have. On fracking and our need for a clean energy future it’s high time we did more then simply “flex our collective muscles”…

Amber from Strocel.com reminds us that “natural gas” isn’t all that “natural” after all, regardless of how it is extracted. In fact “natural gas” is just another name for methane, a potent greenhouse gas that has the potential to hasten our ride to the end of the “climate change” road….Amber helps us understand the importance of “climate neutral” sources of energy and why we should think of where the power comes from when we turn on the lights in our home, cook food and how conserving and reducing our energy use generally are important family “tools” in the fight against climate change.

Some of these posts have been written in the past few weeks and months, others over the past few years which reminds us that this is NOT a new issue, yet it is one that has been flying “under the radar” for far too long. Help us share the facts by sharing this post and the posts of all these amazing Climate Mamas with your friends, family and colleagues.

NJ Pipeline Walk 9-12

I attended the Shale Gas Outrage in Philadelphia on September 20th, and on September 19th joined New Jersey elected officials and representatives from various environmental organizations for a walk along a gas pipeline route. I have found that for me, the most compelling reasons to act and to act out are often when I hear directly from effected people and see the damage that fracking and its infrastructure can cause to our health, or environment, our climate and our planet.

As Climate Mamas and Papas we need to use our voices, our networks and our communities. We have no hope of competing “head to head” against the money that oil and gas companies can use to buy ads and try to “sell us” on the “virtues” of natural gas. Our hope lies in the facts and our love and our desire for a positive future for ourselves and our children. We need to take a “deep breath” and recognize that we are in this fight for the long haul. Our time is now. Our futures demand it and Mother Earth is repeatedly and patiently sending us an S.O.S!

Make sure to check the Global Frackdown site for an event near you. Check in regularly with ClimateMama for fracking updates. FYI, Monday, September 24th is the final day that Governor Christie of New Jersey has to either sign into law or veto the NJ legislature’s bi-partisan bill to ban fracking wastewater from New Jersey. This “just in” 2pm ET 9/21/12: Governor Christie vetoed the fracking waste bill…he said it was “unconstitutional to limit out of state fracking waste from entering New Jersey.”

Living Plastic Free: Sage Advice From Beth Terry

I took the Rodale Plastic Free Challenge in 2011 and my family and I tried to live “plastic free” for one week…realization for our family – impossible. Yet Beth Terry, author of Plastic-Free: How I Kicked the Plastic Habit and How You Can Too

Used with Permission

and founder of the popular blog My Plastic Free Life, has been working at living “plastic free” for about 5 years, and seems to have most of the bases covered.

I am thrilled to be part of the Plastic Free Book Tour. Beth’s book, Plastic Free is a wealth of knowledge, tips and resources. From the moment you pick up the book – published by SkyHorse Publishing – feel it in your hands and see how it is put together (without any plastic materials, including plastic glue, coatings, or even synthetic thread!) you know that Beth is about “walking the walk” and not only “talking the talk.”

Below are my top 5 reflections and highlights from Beth’s book, Plastic Free, How I kicked the Plastic Habit and You can too.

1. Honest – I love the honest look Beth takes of herself and of the world we live in. Beth isn’t shy to shows us her flaws and her failures, or to point out our own.

2. Practical – The book is full of checklists, resource lists and how tos. I would love to see a companion resource guide down the road! (hint, hint!)

3. Realistic- Chapter 8 of Beth’s Book addresses feeling overwhelmed, something I feel every once and a while working full time on climate change education and advocacy. I found Beth’s advice so helpful: breath, spend time outdoors, spend time with loved ones, read inspiring stories, write it down, one thing at a time, congratulate myself for my progress, and finally very important and something I don’t do enough – make a game at it. This last point is so important to remember as we consider “heady and life altering” issues like plastic pollution and climate change. Beth’s advice “gives us permission” to make things playful as a way to remind ourselves that while we shouldn’t “rest on our laurels,” the balance of the world doesn’t rest on our individual shoulders!

4. Hopeful – Following up on point 3 above, I loved Chapter 10, Nine Reasons our Personal Changes Matter. Too often when dealing with big issues like plastic pollution and climate change people, organizations and politicians tend to “cop out” by saying that only policy change can bring forth the seismic changes we need – so in the intractable partisan times we are living in – people seem to be throwing up their hands and saying: “nothing can happen now.” While Beth acknowledges the importance of policy change she reminds us that our individual actions matter too.

5. Humorous – similar to the “vibe” you get and the reasons Beth’s blog is such a runaway success, Beth is really funny and irreverent. Beth and Plastic Free keep you reading and engaged while you learn about key tips, references and facts that will empower you on your personal journey to live a more sustainable life.

Beth has reduced her plastic waste from 4 pounds monthly to about 2 pounds annually, an incredible feat! Beth is an inspiration and one of my role models; someone who has strong beliefs about being a better world

Beth Terry: Used with permission

citizen, and then “owns” her beliefs in every way. Beth is one of my Green Mom Carnival friends and a fellow Women Eco Warrior, and I feel privileged to regularly be on the receiving end of valuable information, research and advice from Beth.

My take on Plastic Free? Amazing!! Buy it and keep it handy as a reference for all things “plastic!”

Also, consider buying a signed copy directly through Beth’s blog to benefit the Plastic Pollution Coalition ClimateMama’s new “go to adviser” on all things plastic free. Look for regular updates from the Plastic Pollution Coalition on our Product and Services guide.

Make sure to check out what others have to say about Plastic Free!

Green Momma Parties: Detox your Home, Empowering and Fun too!

At ClimateMama we regularly have the honor and the pleasure of meeting wonderful people and organizations that give us hope and inspiration by providing the tools that empower us in our daily battle against climate change and by helping us in our quest to create a better, healthier and safer world for our children and ourselves. One of these special organizations we would like to introduce you to is Women’s Voices for The Earth (WVE), a national organization that works to eliminate toxic chemicals that impact our health and the health of our children by changing consumer behaviors, corporate practices and government policies.

We feel strongly that by changing our own behavior to create a more sustainable world (at home and beyond) this helps us build the confidence and experience to encourage others to do the same. So in support of WVE, we want to tell you about a GREAT program they have launched called “Green Momma Parties,” a fun way to get you and your friends involved in making your home a safer and healthier place. So in the midst of the craziness that is your life, as you take on yet another “job,” arranging summer camps, family day trips, fun family vacations and juggling day care and babysitting, carpools and new schedules, what about planning a little structured summer fun for you and your friends?

The WVE Green Momma Party is a fun, do it yourself creative idea with a “mission” – helping you get educated about dangerous toxins that could be lurking in your home and then DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT. The Green Momma Party Guide has practical and economical solutions for each room in the house, and new DIY recipes, making it much easier to spread the word and educate families and your BFFs about the

Go Climate Mamas!

importance of safer products. The Guide comes with an evite link you can use, DIY recipes and “how-to videos.” It even has “action steps” your friends can take right at the party that make it easy for you and your friends to contact YOUR elected officials to demand safer products – that’s our kind of party! (Maybe the next “party” can be a “get together” with your BFFs at your local State House!)

Many of our Climate Mamas and Papas are watching closely as the world meets June 20-22nd in Rio de Janario, Brazil to try to figure out how to create The Future We all Want, in the midst of government bickering and inaction on climate change. Many of us are experiencing first hand or reading and hearing daily reports about extreme weather events the world over and climate change doomsday scenarios; problems and issues that feel too big to get our arms around and too far out of our control. Part of taking control back is doing something positive for yourself, your family, your community and beyond. Taking back control should also mean having the opportunity and ability to have some fun while you are at it as well! So, grab your friends and consider hosting a Green Momma Party. A Green Momma Party is all about learning, sharing ideas, and making changes – it is NOT about buying products.

Check in with MomsRising for some great tips on Green Momma Parties, from some amazing “Green Mamas!” Do you know about any other great ideas, that help us learn more about what we can do to take better care of our homes and our planet, while having some fun along the way? Share them with us!
